U11: Learning to Compete
Full ice, positions, and the first taste of competitive tiers.
The Big Shift
U11 is the transition to "real" hockey rules. Full ice, offsides, icings, and change-on-the-fly. Tiering (A1, A2, A3) begins in city leagues to balance competition.
Position Specialization
Forwards and Defensemen roles become more defined. Full-time goaltenders usually emerge at this stage, though some still rotate.
Development Focus
Team play concepts and "hockey IQ" start here. Breaking out of the zone, positional coverage, and using teammates become coached skills.

"U11 is often called the "Golden Age of Skill Development" because motor skills are rapidly refining."
