The Tier System Explained

AAA

Provincial elite level. Single city-wide team per age division.

Selection:Tryout-based. Highly competitive—only top ~20 players per age group make the team.

Commitment:Highest commitment: 4-5 practices/week, provincial/national travel.

Cost:$5,000-15,000/year

City-wide competitive level. Multiple teams representing zones.

Selection:Tryout-based. Strong players not at AAA level; roughly top 10-15%.

Commitment:3-4 practices/week plus games. Regional travel.

Cost:$2,500-5,000/year

Top competitive tier within local associations.

Selection:Tryout-based within association. Competitive players.

Commitment:2-3 practices/week. Local and in-city travel.

Cost:$1,500-2,500/year

Second competitive tier. Skill development focus.

Selection:Tryout-based. Developing competitive players.

Commitment:2 practices/week. Mostly local games.

Cost:$1,200-2,000/year

A3–A5

Additional local-association tiers used in some age divisions.

Selection:Placement-based after higher-tier evaluations. Exact offerings vary by age division.

Commitment:1-2 practices/week. Local games.

Cost:$1,000-1,500/year

House League

Recreational hockey. Emphasis on fun, participation, and learning.

Selection:No tryouts—all players accepted.

Commitment:1 practice + 1 game/week typical.
